Waco garden April 14, 2020

I'm a Seattle transplant and this whole southern heat is killing me.  In fact until a few weeks ago I was hoping to move back to the PNW (pacific northwest) or some other northern state, where they get hard freezes which kills snakes, spiders and tons of other scary bugs.  That was until I learned that you can garden year-round in TX and because Waco is Zone 8a there are tons of perennial plants :)

So I did what any respectable gardener stuck in a north-facing apartment with no sun would do.

I started a garden.

Two years ago when I moved to Texas I signed up for every local garden group I could find, from shared earth to community gardens.  Two years later there is still no place for me to garden.  So I got crafty.  Right outside my apartment is a strip of dirt about 3 feet wide and about 50 feet long.  It's HARD, HEAVY rocky clay that has nothing growing on it.  I decided to poll the neighbors and see if they were cool if I took it over as a garden.  Not only were they cool with it, they LOVED the idea.

Enter gorilla gardening.  I technically have no permission to grow my garden here, and it could be ripped down at any point.  Did that stop me? NOPE!  clearly, I'm insane, but since I'm locked down with Covid-19 I decided to risk it all in favor of mental health.  Gardening is my Therapy and so I embarked on a messy, cold, smelly gardening journey.

Step 1: Dig up heavy clay

Step 2: Amend with Leaves and grass clippings.

Step 3: Buy compost and topsoil to topdress
What 1000lbs of bagged soil looks my legs needed a few days of rest after moving it all.

Step 4: Plan garden

Step 5: Plant garden
